    Liberal intellectuals actively promote democracy and secularism in the Western world and in societies of third-world countries that are embracing tolerance. However, one might question why these liberal intellectuals do not exert similar efforts to foster secularism in the Arab world. Such efforts could significantly impact over 50 Muslim-majority countries by encouraging the adoption of secular principles. The Arab world, often seen as a bastion of non-secular and religious-based ideologies, could greatly benefit from a focus on secularism. Many Muslim-majority countries struggle to embrace secular principles, and a targeted effort by these liberal intellectuals in the Arab world could potentially facilitate the widespread adoption of secularism.

    Why does the professor express disappointment when the right wins, instead of remaining neutral and acknowledging that the election results reflect the voters' choices? Additionally, what motivates people to vote for the right or left, instead of simply concluding that the right winning is disappointing?

    • @brendankolar1370
      @brendankolar1370 9 днів тому

      i think the professor acknowledges elections reflect voter choices. but he also is wary of when elections do not reflect voter choice. i think the professor is mostly neutral. but i think he shares his informed opinion, of worrying that the illiberal populist nationalist right wing is bad for liberalism, because the professor is interested in the preservation of liberal democracies. as he said at the beginning of his talk, policy makers have a responsibility to take action in the world, and use democratically legitimated power, and reflect liberal democratic values. he specifically lays out what he means in his 1st point: he says there is unhappiness with the classical liberal notion that every human being has equal dignity which should be protected by a rule of law and a constitutional order which guarantees rights and limits government. the next thing he says, BEFORE "complaining about the right winning" is say that some of the progressive left is trying to move past liberalism, which he disagrees with. but then he says the right is unhappy with liberalism for different reasons- namely that, because of their liberal constitutions and self imposed obligations, they cannot engage in the traditional national ethnic cultural hegemony and exclusion that they imagine might make them happier, and so they want to create less equal societies, with more privileges for certain groups- namely themselves, by for example, building border fences, or limiting access to citizenship, or civil rights, or civil services, or withdrawing from international treaty obligations to respect certain human rights, etc etc. all of the sorts of things that the illiberal right wing nationalists are trying to do recently, the brexiters, or the french, or the italians, or the german afd, or the poles or the hungarians etc etc etc,,, because in those countries, right wing parties have been growing, in addition to trump. i specifically think he thinks trump will be bad for liberalism, because as he mentioned, trump voters do not care, and trump doesn't care, if they win by votes or win by some other means,, which is a bad start. and trump doesn't care about supporting the global liberal institutions or alliances, and trump is willing to befriend the illiberal governments like putin or orban or whoever else, i think, for the most part, he does remain objective, because i think hes basically happy to criticize the right, or the left, when either side is illiberal. but the right is currently more successful, and is more likely to be successful going forward, and they are succeeding by somewhat illiberal means and accomplishing illiberal goals, which i think the professor worries, may lead to more conflict, and human suffering.

    I disagree with Anand's anecdote that people don't want to talk about Brexit. Many know & complain that Brexit has badly impacted their lives. They can join the dots when they are personally affected, when their SME goes to the wall, when they can't get a dr's appt, when the choice of fresh fruit & veg is hugely reduced with short sell by dates, when common medicines are unavailable, when you're restricted to 90 days in 180 from spending time with relatives or travelling in EU, when the cost of employing extra Customs & Border force employees has risen & when our global reputation & soft power has decreased. Tory & Labour Parties however don't want to mention it.

    Democracy is when those who make decisions on your behalf have the duty to ask for your consent first. Today's republics are actually modern oligarchies where the interest groups of the rich are arbitrated by the people, that is, you can choose from which table of the rich you will receive crumbs. The "fatigue" of democracy occurs when there is a big difference between the interests of the elected and the voters, thus people lose confidence in the way society functions. As a result, poor and desperate citizens will vote with whoever promises them a lifeline, i.e. populists or demagogues. The democratic aspect is a collateral effect in societies where the economy has a strong competitive aspect, that is, the interests of those who hold the economic power in society are divergent. Thus those whealty, and implicitly with political power in society, supervise each other so that none of them have undeserved advantages due to politics. For this reason, countries where mineral resources have an important weight in GDP are not democratic (Russia, Venezuela, etc.), because a small group of people can exploit these resources in their own interest. In poor countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, etc.) the main exploited resource may even be the state budget, as they have convergent interests in benefiting, in their own interest, from this resource. It is easy to see if it is an oligarchy because in a true democracy laws would not be passed that would not be in the interest of the many. The first modern oligarchy appeared in England at the end of the 17th century. After the bourgeois revolution led by Cromwell succeeded, the interest groups of the rich were unable to agree on how to divide their political power in order not to reach the dictatorship of one. The solution was to appoint a king to be the arbiter. In republics, the people are the arbiter, but let's not confuse the possibility of choosing which group will govern you with democracy, that is, with the possibility of citizens deciding which laws to pass and which not to. The solution is modern direct democracy in which every citizen can vote, whenever he wants, over the head of the parliamentarian who represents him. He can even dismiss him if the majority of his voters consider that he does not correctly represent their interests. It's like when you have to build a house and you choose the site manager and the architect, but they don't have the duty to consult with you. The house will certainly not look the way you want it, but the way they want it, and it is more certain that you will be left with the money given and without the house. It is strange that outside of the political sphere, nowhere, in any economic or sports activity, will you find someone elected to a leadership position and who has failure after failure and is fired only after 4 years. We, the voters, must be consulted about the decisions and if they have negative effects we can dismiss them at any time, let's not wait for the soroco to be fulfilled, because we pay, not them. In any company, the management team comes up with a plan approved by the shareholders. Any change in this plan must be re-approved by the shareholders and it is normal because the shareholders pay.

      @@lukeamongthemmongols6258 The prime minister is the head of government and a president is the head of state. How can you judge the president if he was not part of the decisions? The president has only some governmental power but the president is not part of the government and was not making decisions. The President of the Republic has a fairly independent status with respect to Parliament. Secondly, what the Marin's government did? Crushed the economy. Do you think that works forever?

      Agree with you in respect to our prior PM Sanna Marin. But to cut Child support when jobs are extremely difficult to find and businesses are going down? Why? So zelensky can buy another mansion? To spend in weapons while they could have used diplomacy? That's the problem I have with the previous and present government. I don't really care who actually makes the decision there, probably the decision is being made for them anyways.

    Is there an explanation about why the Europeans have inflicted a punitive trade embargo on Australia for generations but expect Australia to pay for their defence? In a Europe that needs alliances it’s strategically moronic that the Europeans insist on trading with Russia while waging an economic war on Australia which can easily replace many Russian imports.

    • @samhartford8677

      What are you talking about? The tariffs on key resources are close to zero if not zero in the EU. What is hindering the Australian capacity to export is distance. Also, would you care to inform me how Australia is paying for our defence? Australia is not in NATO.

    • @seanlander9321
      @seanlander9321 Місяць тому

      @@samhartford8677 What tariffs? Australian exports aren’t even at the point where tariffs are a factor because the quota system prevents imports from Australia or restricts them to the point of irrelevance, and that’s a load of bull about Australia not having capacity. As for defence, who do you think pays for the monitoring by America for the Northern Hemisphere? It’s called Pine Gap, been going on for almost as long as the trade embargo by Europe.

    It’s a disgrace to see academics turn into deluded politicians and politicians turn into nothing but propaganda tools. Hertie School, at least you should understand that diplomacy is not more weapons and more money, diplomacy isn’t pushing propaganda. It’s a disgrace that a School I had respect for actually turned out to be nothing but propaganda tool to brainwash young innocent minds. In addition to that, you’re allowing corrupt and puppet politicians to corrupt the heart and minds of young adults to fill them with hatred instead of teaching them diplomacy. This world would never be a better place for any one of us if politicians and academics continue to push the US agenda such is more wars and destruction.

    I find it bizarre to make a ballyhoo out if a fraudulent non binding advisory referendum that was nothing but a mass publication of lies based on specially written software designed to manipulate an entire nation into "voting" for the ambitions of a handful of charlatans. There is no economic science or rational behind this. It's like producing endless talks, meetings and presentations and seemingly intellectual discussions about Santa Claus. Brexit was simply a bank robbery upon an entire nation that was completely saturated with fiction lies and high tech manipulation which to this day most of them still don't understand or can grasp. Discussions about any economics as a result of economic suicide invoked by criminals, as if this were a subject worth studying or exploring further, is an exercise in absurdity.

If CO2 occupies 0.04% of the atmosphere and humanity is responsible for 3% of that 0.04% and Australia is responsible for 1.3% of the 3% of the 0.04% That is comparable to a grain of sugar on the Harbor Bridge.
